Berea is the name of a suburb located right next to the CBD area of Johannesburg. The suburb was established quite a few years ago in 1893 and was named after a region found in Durban with the same name. As with many parts of central Johannesburg, the area deteriorated over the years. Thankfully there have been city improvements and this includes the suburb of Berea. Crime used to be sky high, but recently a survey shows the crime to have decreased by over 70%.
Various suburbs situated around Berea include Hillbrow, Parktown, Yeoville, Doornfontein and Highlands. Being so close to busy regions, means that Berea also has access to number of main roads and freeways. Both the Albertina Sisulu Road and the M1 are nearby. The suburb itself has an extensive bus route in and around the area.
The Barnato Park High School is the only school situated within Berea, but there are also a number of schools in neighbouring areas. There are a few supermarkets and grocery stores throughout the area. The Barnato Crossing Shopping Mall is a larger facility offering most of the more popular shops. The Netcare Rand Hospital is within the Berea region and a little further north is the Berea Fire Station.
Throughout Berea there are a number of small parks or open spaces. To mention a few, you have the Yeoville Park, the Mitchelle Park and the Berea Park. Berea consists out of a number of apartment buildings and older houses as well as a few businesses here and there.
