Located in central Johannesburg, Ferreirasdorp is a very old part of the region. The very first people who came to dig for gold settled in the area in 1886. The town gradually grew around and has become the busy metropolis that is Johannesburg. The entire area has easy access to a number of main roads including Commissioner Street amongst others.
The area has many heritage spots and interesting places to visit. The name Ferreirasdorp comes from the leader of a group of gold diggers who came to settle in the area, his name was Ignatius Ferreira. There is the site of Ferreira’s camp and wagon, which is today a heritage site. Then you have the Chancellor House along Fox Street where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo first had their law practice.
Hidden underneath the Standard Bank building along Simmonds Street, is the Ferreira Mine Stope. This is the original entrance to the mine tunnel, which is now a museum. Other interesting places in the area include the Mining District Museum and the Jozi Market. There are plenty more places to visit in the immediate surrounding areas such as the Mining District Museum and even the SAB World of Beer Museum.
In the centre of the suburb is the Johannesburg Central Magistrate Court. Scattered throughout the suburb are a number of restaurants and stores. In-between the Albertina Sisulu Road and Commissioner Street is the Ferreira Primary School. The Johannesburg Library, which is the largest public library in South Africa, is only a short distance away.
