Lone Hill is one of the newer suburbs of Johannesburg and is situated on the outskirts of Bryanston. Neighbouring areas include Witkoppen, Fourways and Paulshof. The R511 or William Nicol Drive forms the western border, with Witkoppen Road forming the southern border. Not far away, the Witkoppen Road intersects with the N1 Western Bypass, making travel to surrounding areas very easy.
As the name depicts it was possibly named after one lonely hill visible in the area. This one lonely hill is only one of a few that are found in the Johannesburg area. The suburb can be found only 28 km from the City Centre. The actual hill is found in the Lone Hill Municipal Nature Reserve where you will be able to walk to the top and enjoy a picnic. When you are at the top of the hill you can look out over the eastern horizon and see the Kyalami Castle, also referred to as the Michael Jackson’s Castle. This is because Michael Jackson showed an interest in it many years ago.
The interesting fact about Lone Hill Nature Reserve is that it preserves 3 Stone Age furnaces that were constructed in the 1600’s. The furnace and pottery sites of the quarry were recently evacuated, and have since then been closed off in order to protect them.
Lone Hill has two educational institutions, Crawford Preparatory Lone Hill and the Crawford Schools Lone Hill. There is the Lone Hill Shopping Centre close to the nature reserve; there are also many more shopping centres in the surrounding suburbs.
