Morningside is a suburb of the Johannesburg Municipality and is surrounded by Edenburg, Parkmore, Sandown and Woodmead. The suburb is fairly well situated, as it has the M1 or Pretoria Main Road lying to the east and the N1 Western Bypass not far away to the north. You also have the Rivonia Road running through the area. The Johannesburg City Centre is located only 30 minutes away. There is also a good bus service and taxi service running through the suburb.
Morningside was originally part of the old farm, which was known as “Zandfontein”. The area was later named as a suburb on the 8 March 1950. The suburb was most probably named after a town in Edinburgh, Scotland, which has the same name. Morningside is largely a residential suburb but it also has a thriving commercial section with small and medium business establishments. There are still a number of old houses still standing, which were built after the Second World War. There are also townhouses with some gated complexes.
The Outspan Bird Sanctuary found along the Outspan Spruit within the suburb, is a great place to go and relax. You can walk the dog or stroll with the family, or if you are interested in the bird life there is ample opportunity to spot a variety of bird species.
For the shopper there are two shopping centres within the suburb, the Wedge Shopping Centre and the Morningside Shopping Centre. The Morningside Shopping Centre has about 62 shops to choose from. There are clothing shops, jewellery shops, a pharmacy, health and beauty shops and tons more.
