Sandton is a wealthy and prosperous suburb of Johannesburg. The areas name is derived from two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. Sandton was declared an independent municipal area in 1969, but then lost this right when the South African local government was reorganised. This suburb now falls within the Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
Before Sandton was developed it was made up of three farms Zandfontein, Driefontein and Rietfontein. The discovery of an Iron Age Smelter in Lone hill proves that there were occupants on the land many years before the first Voortrekkers settled there. Then in the 1980’s and 90’s Sandton City was constructed making it the second CBD within the Johannesburg District.
Now in the 21ST Century many of the big corporations moved their offices from the Johannesburg CBD to Sandton. This led to the construction of the Sandton Convention Centre, which is the biggest Centre on the whole of the African Content. This convention centre has hosted many international and national events. Many of the old dilapidated areas in Sandton have been revamped, making them into major industrial areas. These include the regions of Wynberg and Kramerville.
The construction of the Sandton City Shopping Mall produced one of the biggest attractions in the area. This centre is regarded as the largest shopping mall in Africa. In 2004 the Sandton Square, which is located near the Mall had a change of name, it became the Nelson Mandela Square. Here you will also find a bronze statue of Mandela in the centre of the Square.
Thea area has many main roads including the M1 Pretoria Main Road and the N1 Western Bypass, which passes through Sandton. The Sandton area also has the “Flag Ship” station of the Gautrain, which makes travel to the OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg and Pretoria CBD’s easy.
